Beta Alanine is a sports nutrition supplement particularly useful to those involved in exercise performance, such as athletes or bodybuilders.
Beta-alanine is a non-essential amino acid. Unlike most amino acids, Beta Alanine is not used by your body to synthesize proteins. Instead, combines with histidine (essential amino acid) to produce the amino acid compound carnosine, which is then stored in your skeletal muscles. Carnosine reduces lactic acid accumulation in your muscles during exercise.
Increased carnosine levels improve athletic performance because they help your muscles reduce their acid levels during exercise. This lessens overall fatigue, increasing exercise capacity and muscle endurance, and boosts performance. Results are more evident in performing high-intensity exercises lasting one to several minutes.
Furthermore, carnosine has antioxidant and immune-enhancing properties. So it also benefits muscle function in older adults.
It is generally recommended to consume 2–5 grams of beta-alanine daily. Taking it with a meal may be even more effective.
